Catgut has been utilized in plastic surgery since 1938 for procedures like cleft palate repair, otoplasty, blepharoplasty, and pediatric lacerations.
In oral surgery, catgut has been employed for wound repairs and tonsillectomy since the 1970s.
Key advantages include absorbability, excellent tensile strength, and assured sterility from sealed packaging. Chromed catgut and finer sizes are preferred.

Conclusions:

Catgut sutures continue to be widely used and offer significant advantages in plastic and oral surgery.
