    Summary

High power laser pulse compression using chirped pulse amplification (CPA) can introduce pulse front tilt. This study shows beam curvature, not just collimation, controls tilt, offering a new method for pulse front manipulation.

    Area of Science:

    • Optics and Photonics
    • Laser Physics
    • Nonlinear Optics

    Background:

    • Chirped Pulse Amplification (CPA) is crucial for high-power lasers, utilizing grating pairs for pulse compression.
    • Accurate pulse compression typically assumes ideal beam collimation to prevent spatio-temporal couplings.
    • Deviations from perfect collimation can impact pulse quality and temporal characteristics.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the impact of beam curvature on pulse compression in CPA systems.
    • To analyze pulse propagation through a single-pass compressor without assuming perfect beam collimation.
    • To demonstrate a controllable mechanism for pulse front tilt generation.

    Main Methods:

    • Theoretical analysis of pulse propagation through a grating-based pulse compressor.

  • Modeling the effects of beam divergence and convergence (curvature) on the compressed pulse.
  • Experimental validation using a large-scale CPA laser system with controlled beam curvatures.
  • Main Results:

    • Pulse compression without the 'good collimation' approximation leads to pulse front tilt.
    • The magnitude of the pulse front tilt is directly proportional to the normalized distance from the beam waist.
    • Experimental results confirm the theoretical predictions across various beam curvatures.

    Conclusions:

    • Beam curvature is a significant factor in pulse compressor design for CPA systems.
    • Pulse front tilt can be intentionally controlled by managing beam curvature, offering a novel tuning parameter.
    • This finding provides a practical method for manipulating spatio-temporal properties in high-power laser pulses.
