Area of Science:

  • Otolaryngology
  • Surgical Procedures

Background:

  • Tonsillectomy was historically the most common operation in Ear, Nose, and Throat (ENT) services.
  • Guillotine tonsillectomy without anesthesia was a prevalent surgical technique.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the safety and efficacy of guillotine tonsillectomy without anesthesia.
  • To compare guillotine tonsillectomy with anesthetic dissection methods.

Main Methods:

  • A retrospective review of 34,000 guillotine tonsillectomies performed without anesthesia between 1958 and 1981.
  • Data collection focused on patient outcomes, including pain levels, mortality, and morbidity.

Main Results:

  • Over 93% of patients reported no or only slight pain during the procedure.

Related Experiment Videos

  • There were zero recorded deaths or complications (mortality or morbidity) in the 34,000 cases.
  • The non-anesthetic guillotine method demonstrated a high degree of safety.
  • Conclusions:

    • Guillotine tonsillectomy without anesthesia is a distinctly safe and effective surgical option.
    • This method is considered superior to anesthetic dissection for tonsillectomy due to its safety profile and satisfactory results.
