Age has no effect on ankle proprioception when movement history is controlled

Age does not appear to affect ankle proprioception in healthy adults. This study found no significant differences in proprioceptive acuity between young and older individuals when tested under controlled conditions.

- Muscle spindle sensitivity was standardized by repetitive ankle movements before each test to control for thixotropy.

- Linear regression analysis revealed no significant effect of age on proprioceptive acuity.
- Detection thresholds (0.13 ± 0.10°), reaction times (0.251 ± 0.054 s), and joint position sense measures (intercept, slope, R²) were not associated with age.
- The reliability of the testing methods was found to be good to excellent.
Conclusions:
- Contrary to some expectations, this study found little evidence of age-related decline in ankle proprioception in healthy, community-dwelling adults under controlled laboratory conditions.
- The findings suggest that factors other than age alone may contribute to proprioceptive impairments in older adults, particularly those at risk of falling.
- Further research is needed to explore proprioceptive function in older adults with pre-existing functional limitations or a history of falls.
