Psoriasis and obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) have a confirmed bidirectional link. This systematic review found increased odds of OSA in psoriasis patients and increased psoriasis risk in OSA patients.
Area of Science:
- Dermatology and Sleep Medicine
Background:
- The association between psoriasis and obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) remains unclear.
- Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory skin condition.
- OSA is a common sleep-related breathing disorder.
Purpose of the Study:
- To systematically investigate the bidirectional relationship between psoriasis and OSA.
- To synthesize evidence from multiple study designs.
Main Methods:
- Systematic review and meta-analysis of case-control, cross-sectional, and cohort studies.
- Searched MEDLINE and Embase databases.
- Assessed study bias using the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale.
- Employed random-effects models for meta-analysis.
Main Results:
- Included 4 case-control/cross-sectional studies and 3 cohort studies (5,840,495 subjects).
- Found significantly increased odds of OSA in psoriasis patients (OR 2.60).
- Identified a significantly increased risk of psoriasis in OSA patients (IRR 2.52).
Conclusions:
- Established a bidirectional association between psoriasis and OSA.
- Recommends inquiring about sleep quality in psoriasis patients.
- Suggests considering sleep studies for OSA symptoms in psoriasis patients.
