Stereoscopic 3D videos significantly improved medical students' understanding of anatomical relationships and clinical reasoning compared to 2D videos. This 3D approach enhances learning and is favored by students as a supplementary teaching tool.

Area of Science:

  • Medical Education
  • Anatomy Learning
  • Educational Technology

Background:

  • Traditional anatomy teaching relies on lectures, dissections, and books.
  • 3D stereoscopic videos offer an accessible and affordable alternative for students.
  • Emerging technologies are transforming medical education methodologies.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the effectiveness of 3D stereoscopic videos in improving anatomy learning.
  • To compare learning outcomes between 3D and 2D instructional videos.
  • To assess student satisfaction with 3D stereoscopic video learning.

Main Methods:

  • Prospective controlled study at a single institution.
  • Participants received neuroanatomy instruction via 3D or 2D video.

  • Pre- and post-instruction tests assessed knowledge of anatomical relationships and reasoning.
  • Main Results:

    • The 3D group showed significantly better scores in anatomical relationships (86.4% vs. 63.5%) and clinical reasoning (76.8% vs. 67.6%).
    • No significant difference was found in fundamental anatomical knowledge between groups.
    • A high percentage of students (85%) supported using 3D videos as a complementary teaching tool.

    Conclusions:

    • 3D stereoscopic videos can enhance the learning of complex anatomical relationships and clinical reasoning.
    • Integrating 3D videos into medical curricula offers a valuable supplementary learning resource.
    • Student feedback indicates strong acceptance and preference for 3D video technology in anatomy education.
