Summary

Platelet counts are significantly lower in patients with cerebral infarction (CI). Platelet levels normalize within 12 days, suggesting increased platelet activation and aggregation during acute CI events.

Area of Science:

  • Neurology
  • Hematology
  • Cardiovascular Research

Background:

  • Cerebral infarction (CI) is a significant health concern.
  • Platelet function plays a crucial role in thrombotic events.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate platelet count variations in patients with cerebral infarction.
  • To explore the dynamics of platelet count during the acute phase of cerebral infarction.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective analysis of platelet counts in 45 CI patients and 45 controls.
  • Prospective monitoring of platelet counts in 12 CI patients over 30 days.
  • Statistical comparison of platelet counts between groups and over time.

Main Results:

  • Mean platelet count was significantly lower in CI patients compared to controls (260,220 vs. 302,422/mm3, p<0.05).

Related Experiment Videos

  • In prospective analysis, mean platelet count was initially low (213,330/mm3) but progressively increased.
  • Platelet counts normalized by day 9-12, reaching levels not statistically different from controls (305,630/mm3, p<0.01).
  • Conclusions:

    • Cerebral infarction is associated with a marked decrease in circulating platelet count.
    • The observed decrease is likely due to increased in vivo platelet activation and aggregation.
    • Platelet count recovery suggests a dynamic process of platelet consumption and regeneration post-CI.
