Coping Strategies: Emotion Focused01:20

Coping Strategies: Emotion Focused

349
Emotion-focused coping refers to a set of strategies aimed at managing the emotional impact of stressors, rather than directly addressing their causes. This approach involves altering one's emotional response to stressful situations to reduce their psychological effects. For example, individuals might talk with a friend or engage in activities like journaling to express their feelings. Such actions can help achieve emotional clarity or release, providing the psychological stability needed...

The Influence of Cognition on Affect01:29

The Influence of Cognition on Affect

147
Cognition plays a pivotal role in shaping emotional experiences, as demonstrated by Schachter and Singer’s two-factor theory of emotion. According to this model, emotion arises from a combination of physiological arousal and cognitive interpretation. The body’s physiological response to stimuli is ambiguous and only gains emotional significance through cognitive labeling. For instance, an increased heart rate and adrenaline surge while standing near an attractive person may be...

Socioemotional Development during Infancy01:30

Socioemotional Development during Infancy

342
Socio-emotional development in infancy is primarily shaped by early emotional responses and social connections, with temperament playing a central role. Temperament refers to the consistent patterns in an individual's emotional and behavioral responses, observable even in infancy. By examining temperament, researchers can better understand an infant's unique ways of interacting with the world, influencing subsequent personality and socio-emotional growth.

Robbers Cave

14.7K
During the 1950s, the landmark Robbers Cave experiment demonstrated that when groups must compete with one another, intergroup conflict, hostility, and even violence may result. At the Oklahoman summer camp, two troops of boys—termed the Rattlers and the Eagles—took part in a week-long tournament. During this time, their negativity culminated in derogatory name-calling, fistfights, and even vandalism and destruction of property. However, this work also revealed that such tension...

In- and Out-Groups01:31

In- and Out-Groups

42.8K
People all belong to a gender, race, age, and social economic group. These groups provide a powerful source of our identity and self-esteem (Tajfel & Turner, 1979) and serve as our in-groups. An in-group is a group that we identify with or see ourselves as belonging to.

Labeling Emotion01:20

Labeling Emotion

542
Emotional labeling is a cognitive process that involves identifying and naming one's emotions, such as anger, fear, happiness, or sadness. It allows individuals to recognize and express their internal emotional states, a critical aspect of emotional regulation and communication. Labeling emotions requires more than mere recognition; it also involves drawing upon memory and contextual cues to understand the current situation and apply a corresponding emotional label. For instance, feeling...

Area of Science:

  • Psychology
  • Conflict Resolution
  • Digital Health

Background:

  • Intractable conflicts foster negative emotions, increasing support for aggression.
  • Emotion regulation, especially cognitive reappraisal, can mitigate negative emotions and policy preferences.
  • Scalable interventions are needed to manage emotions in conflict settings.

Purpose of the Study:

  • Introduce ReApp, a mobile game designed to train cognitive reappraisal for emotion regulation.
  • Evaluate ReApp's efficacy in reducing negative emotions and support for aggressive policies.
  • Assess ReApp's potential impact within the Israeli-Palestinian conflict context.

Main Methods:

  • Developed ReApp, a mobile game focused on cognitive reappraisal techniques.
  • Assessed the impact of ReApp on participants' emotional states (anger, disgust).
  • Measured changes in participants' support for aggressive political policies.

Main Results:

  • ReApp usage led to significant reductions in anger and disgust.
  • Participants who played ReApp demonstrated decreased support for aggressive policies targeting outgroups.
  • The study provides evidence for ReApp's effectiveness in a real-world conflict scenario.

Conclusions:

  • Mobile games like ReApp offer a scalable, evidence-based approach to emotion regulation.
  • ReApp has the potential to influence large populations and promote conflict resolution.
  • Cognitive reappraisal training via games can shift policy preferences away from aggression.
