The randomization process involves assigning study participants randomly to experimental or control groups based on their probability of being equally assigned. Randomization is meant to eliminate selection bias and balance known and unknown confounding factors so that the control group is similar to the treatment group as much as possible. A computer program and a random number generator can be used to assign participants to groups in a way that minimizes bias.

Summary

Reactivating inactive blood donors is crucial. Telephone calls increased re-donation rates more than SMS reminders, but SMS messages were more cost-effective for donor re-recruitment.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy of telephone calls and short message service (SMS) reminders in reactivating inactive blood donors.
  • To assess the cost-effectiveness of these communication methods for blood donor re-recruitment.
  • To identify factors influencing donor return behavior and self-reported reasons for non-donation.

Main Methods:

  • A single-center, randomized controlled trial involving 11,880 inactive blood donors in Guangzhou, China.
  • Donors were assigned to telephone communication, SMS reminders (with altruistic appeal), or a control group.
  • Primary outcome was the re-donation rate, analyzed using intention-to-treat (ITT) and average treatment effect on the treated (ATT) methods over a 1-year follow-up.

Main Results:

  • SMS reminders with altruistic appeals are a cost-effective method to encourage timely re-donation.
