Displaying irrelevant information on Variable Message Signs (VMS) significantly reduces driver compliance with essential detour messages. While memory for the detour was unaffected, VMS effectiveness is compromised by non-traffic content.
Area of Science:
- Human-computer interaction
- Traffic engineering
- Cognitive psychology
Background:
- Variable Message Signs (VMS) are crucial for traffic management.
- Potential for VMS to display non-traffic-related content exists.
- Effectiveness of VMS may be diminished by irrelevant information.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the impact of irrelevant VMS messages on detour compliance and memory.
- To determine if practicing with irrelevant VMS content affects response to critical traffic information.
Main Methods:
- 39 participants were randomly assigned to three experimental groups in a driving simulator.
- Groups differed in VMS message exposure: detour only, irrelevant messages preceding detour, or inconsistent detour message.
- Measured compliance with detour, and later recall and recognition of the detour message.
Main Results:
- Significantly lower compliance with the detour message was observed when preceded by irrelevant VMS content.
- All groups demonstrated comparable memory performance (recall and recognition) for the detour message.
- Irrelevant VMS messages negatively impacted adherence to critical traffic instructions.
Conclusions:
- Irrelevant information on VMS, such as advertisements or safety slogans, can decrease compliance with essential traffic messages.
- VMS effectiveness in conveying critical information is potentially reduced by extraneous content.
- Future VMS design should prioritize traffic-relevant information to ensure driver compliance.
