Area of Science:

  • Robotics and Computer Vision
  • Optical Sensing Technologies

Background:

  • Wii remote infrared (IR) cameras offer low-cost, high-frame-rate target detection.
  • Current applications are limited to indoor environments due to sunlight interference.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To adapt Wii remote IR cameras for reliable outdoor target positioning.
  • To overcome limitations posed by sunlight interference in outdoor IR sensing.

Main Methods:

  • Introduced a signal modulation technique to encode IR beacons with specific patterns.
  • Analyzed sunlight irradiance to ensure beacon detectability under bright conditions.
  • Proposed using a filter to manage sensor overload in extremely bright environments.

Main Results:

  • Successfully distinguished IR beacons from sunlight interference using the modulation technique.
  • Demonstrated reliable IR beacon detection even under intense sunlight.
  • Validated the effectiveness of the filtering method for sensor overload mitigation.

Conclusions:

  • The proposed methods enable the practical use of Wii remote IR cameras for outdoor positioning.
  • This advancement expands the application scope of low-cost IR sensing technology.
