Glaucoma: Overview01:25

Glaucoma: Overview

1.1K
Glaucoma is an eye condition characterized by increased intraocular pressure that damages the retina and optic nerve, leading to irreversible blindness if left untreated. The human eye has various components, including the cornea, iris, pupil, lens, and optic nerve. Aqueous humor is secreted by the epithelium of the ciliary body in the posterior chamber and flows through the trabecular meshwork and canal of Schlemm, maintaining normal intraocular pressure. The trabecular meshwork and the canal...

Depth Perception and Spatial Vision01:15

Depth Perception and Spatial Vision

1.6K
Depth perception is the ability to perceive objects three-dimensionally. It relies on two types of cues: binocular and monocular. Binocular cues depend on the combination of images from both eyes and how the eyes work together. Since the eyes are in slightly different positions, each eye captures a slightly different image. This disparity between images, known as binocular disparity, helps the brain interpret depth. When the brain compares these images, it determines the distance to an object.

  • Cognitive science
  • Human-computer interaction

Background:

  • Eye-tracking is a prevalent research tool across diverse scientific fields.
  • Inconsistent data preprocessing hinders replicability and reproducibility in eye-tracking studies.
  • Lack of standardized methods complicates data sharing and validation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • Introduce gazeR, an open-source R package designed to standardize eye-tracking data preprocessing.
  • Enhance the transparency, replicability, and reproducibility of eye-tracking research.
  • Provide accessible tools for analyzing gaze position and pupil size data.

Main Methods:

  • Developed gazeR, an R package with functions for reading and preprocessing raw eye-tracking data.
  • Implemented functionalities for gaze position data: formatting, area of interest conversion, and data aggregation.
  • Included methods for pupillometry data: artifact removal, blink handling, baseline correction, and data binning.

Main Results:

  • gazeR offers comprehensive preprocessing capabilities for both gaze and pupil data.
  • The package facilitates data formatting, analysis-ready preparation, and aggregation.
  • Demonstrated gazeR's utility through step-by-step analyses on example datasets.

Conclusions:

  • The gazeR package significantly improves the standardization and transparency of eye-tracking data preprocessing.
  • Adoption of gazeR can lead to more reproducible and reliable findings in vision science, psycholinguistics, and HCI.
  • gazeR is freely available, promoting wider accessibility and collaborative research in the eye-tracking community.
