Electronic Distance Measuring Instruments01:30

Electronic Distance Measuring Instruments

383
Electronic Distance Measuring Instruments (EDMs) are essential tools in modern surveying, offering precise distance measurements by emitting electromagnetic signals and calculating the time required for these signals to travel to a target and return. Two primary types of signals are used in EDMs — light waves and microwaves — each suited to specific environmental and distance requirements. Light-wave-based EDMs utilize either infrared or laser light, providing high accuracy over...

Area of Science:

  • Environmental Science
  • Engineering
  • Public Health

Background:

  • Indoor air quality is crucial for health and productivity.
  • Monitoring systems are needed to assess environmental parameters like carbon dioxide levels.
  • Previous studies highlighted the impact of elevated carbon dioxide on cognitive function.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop and implement a wireless monitoring system for indoor environmental parameters.
  • To continuously measure carbon dioxide, temperature, humidity, and pressure in educational and university settings.
  • To analyze the collected data to assess occupant exposure to varying carbon dioxide concentrations.

Main Methods:

  • Development of a complex monitoring system utilizing IQRF® wireless technology.
  • Deployment of the system in university and secondary school environments for continuous data collection over several months.
  • Archiving data in a database and performing statistical analysis, focusing on carbon dioxide concentrations.

Main Results:

  • Continuous monitoring data were collected and processed from multiple rooms across two distinct locations.
  • Analysis revealed the time distribution of exposure to different carbon dioxide concentration levels.
  • Graphical representations quantified the percentage of time spent in safe versus potentially dangerous air quality conditions.

Conclusions:

  • The developed monitoring system effectively measures indoor environmental parameters.
  • Data analysis provides insights into occupant exposure to carbon dioxide, highlighting areas for improvement.
  • Findings can inform strategies for enhancing indoor air quality in educational and workplace environments.
