This study found a direct link between how often people experience sleep bruxism and morning headaches. Depression and anxiety symptoms were also associated with headaches, but not bruxism frequency.
Area of Science:
- Sleep Medicine
- Psychiatry
- Epidemiology
Background:
- Sleep bruxism is associated with morning headaches, but the frequency relationship is understudied.
- Affective disorders may also play a role in this association.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the relationship between sleep bruxism frequency and morning headaches.
- To explore associations with depression and/or anxiety.
Main Methods:
- Cross-sectional observational study in Curitiba, Brazil (August 2017-May 2018).
- 149 participants (18-65 years) assessed for sleep bruxism, depression, and anxiety using questionnaires and clinical examination.
- Morning headaches evaluated via self-report.
Main Results:
- A significant relationship was found between the frequency of sleep bruxism and morning headaches (P < .001).
- Depression and anxiety symptoms were associated with the presence of headaches (P < .001).
- No association was found between affective disorders and the frequency of sleep bruxism.
Conclusions:
- Confirms a direct relationship between the frequency of sleep bruxism and morning headaches.
- Confirms a linear association between depression/anxiety scores and morning headaches.
