Ethical Dilemmas I01:17

Ethical Dilemmas I

1.7K
Ethical dilemmas in nursing are of utmost importance, as they often arise from the tension between adhering to core ethical principles and the practical realities of healthcare delivery. These dilemmas require nurses to navigate complex situations where competing ethical considerations pull them in different directions.
Let us explore some examples to understand the potentially complex moral decisions nurses face.
Take the case of caring for minors, particularly in areas related to reproductive...

Development of Immunocompetence

669
The initiation of cell-mediated immunity can be observed as early as the third month of fetal growth, with active antibody-mediated immunity following approximately one month later.
The initial cells that migrate from the fetal thymus settle within the skin and epithelial tissues lining the mouth, digestive tract, and in females, the uterus and vagina. These cells, including skin-based dendritic cells, serve as antigen-presenting cells, playing a key role in T cell activation.
Subsequent T...

Pneumonia V: Nursing management and Prevention

3.3K
Nursing management of pneumonia involves promoting airway patency, facilitating rest and conserving energy, encouraging fluid intake, maintaining nutrition, and educating patients.
The nurse must practice strict medical asepsis and adhere to infection control guidelines to minimize healthcare-associated infections.
Enhance airway patency

Accountability and Responsibility of a Nurse II

1.0K
Professional accountability in nursing is a multifaceted concept that encompasses professional ethics, legal standards, and employment expectations. This framework ensures that nurses maintain and elevate the quality of care while upholding the values of their profession. It compels them to treat patients, families, and colleagues with respect, compassion, and integrity.
For example, a nurse demonstrating respect and compassion might listen attentively to a patient's concerns, provide...

Current Trends in Nursing II

3.3K
Trends in nursing are multifactorial and associated with changes in society, within the nursing profession, and in other professions. Notably, telehealth and remote nursing contribute to successful healthcare delivery for numerous patients and help reduce stress for nurses due to nursing shortages. Nurses can reach patients, monitor their conditions, and interact with them using computers, audio, visual accessories, and telephones—for example, remote patient monitoring systems. Likewise,...

Summary

Newborn intensive care unit (NICU) nurses generally have positive attitudes toward infant immunizations but need more education on specific 2-month immunization guidelines. Continued education can improve nurses' knowledge and confidence in discussing vaccines with families.

Area of Science:

  • Neonatal Nursing
  • Pediatric Vaccinations
  • Public Health

Background:

  • Nurses are crucial in educating parents about their child's care plan.
  • Medically stable infants in the NICU setting should receive immunizations.
  • Parental trust in nurses necessitates accurate immunization information.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess NICU nurses' knowledge and attitudes regarding 2-month infant immunizations.
  • To identify gaps in understanding of current immunization guidelines among NICU nurses.

Main Methods:

  • Survey administered to attendees of the National Association of Neonatal Nurses (NAAN) 33rd Annual Conference.
  • Data collected on nurses' knowledge and attitudes concerning 2-month immunizations.
  • 188 NICU nurses completed the survey.

Main Results:

  • A majority of NICU nurses (62.5%) supported immunizing medically stable NICU infants.
  • Only 27% could identify recommended 2-month immunizations.
  • 61.1% were unaware of current minimum age guidelines for vaccine administration.
  • Nurse practitioners demonstrated higher confidence and knowledge regarding immunizations.

Conclusions:

  • NICU nurses require enhanced education on CDC immunization guidelines.
  • Encouraging nurses to teach families about immunizations can reinforce their knowledge.
  • Further research on educational interventions for immunization practices is recommended.
