Summary
Medical students need better resources for undifferentiated emergency medicine (EM) patients. This study identified high-priority EM topics, including critical care, to guide the creation of new open educational resources (OERs) for EM training.
Area of Science:
- Medical Education
- Emergency Medicine Training
- Open Educational Resources (OERs)
Background:
- Medical students face challenges in managing undifferentiated emergency medicine (EM) patients.
- Existing faculty-authored Open Educational Resources (OERs) may not fully address student learning needs.
- There is a gap in EM OERs specifically designed to help students approach undifferentiated presentations.
Purpose of the Study:
- To identify emergency medicine (EM) topics that medical students find most challenging.
- To inform the development of a novel podcast curriculum using Free Open Access Medical Education (FOAMed) principles.
- To create targeted educational resources for approaching undifferentiated EM patients.
Main Methods:
- An online survey-based needs assessment was conducted with key stakeholders.
- 32 EM topics were evaluated by participants on a five-point Likert scale for perceived student learning needs.
- Data was collected from medical students and EM educators, including resident and staff physicians.
Main Results:
- A total of 58 participants (23 medical students, 19 resident physicians, 16 staff EM physicians) met inclusion criteria.
- 23 EM presentations were prioritized as high-need by both students and educators.
- Critical care and acute medicine topics received the highest mean scores for learning need.
Conclusions:
- 23 out of 32 surveyed topics were identified as high priority for developing new online educational resources.
- Nine additional high-priority topics were identified through free-text responses.
- Findings will guide the creation of an open access podcast curriculum for EM medical students.

Introduction Cardiac Emergencies
241
Cardiac emergencies are critical situations involving the heart that require immediate medical intervention to prevent severe complications or death. These emergencies often arise from underlying heart conditions that impair the heart's ability to function correctly.Types of Cardiac EmergenciesThe most common types of cardiac emergencies include Acute Coronary Syndrome (ACS), myocardial infarction (MI), cardiac arrest, and heart failure.Acute Coronary Syndrome (ACS)Acute Coronary Syndrome (ACS)...

Hospitals-II
1.0K
Hospitals provide inpatient and outpatient services. Inpatient services provide care to patients that stay in the hospital for an extended period, ranging from days to months. Examples of inpatient services include intensive care units, hospital wards, or surgeries. Outpatient services provide care to patients who come to a hospital for a diagnostic or treatment but do not stay overnight —for example, diagnostic tests, surgical procedures, or health education.

Rural Health Centers
Rural health centers are specialized care facilities in remote locations with very few medical personnel. The primary care providers who run the centers are mostly Registered Nurse Practitioners. Here, emergency treatment is provided to critically ill or injured patients before they are transferred to the closest hospital. Fortunately, due to advancement in technology, many rural healthcare facilities and professionals have easy access to diagnostic and treatment...

Methods of Documentation VII: EMR
1.3K
Electronic Medical Records (EMRs) primarily center around electronically documenting patients' health information within a single healthcare organization or practice. They contain essential clinical data related to a patient's medical history, diagnoses, medications, treatment plans, lab results, and other pertinent information relevant to the specific encounter or episode of care. EMRs are designed to streamline documentation and workflow processes within individual healthcare...

Airway management is a key skill in emergency and critical care settings, as maintaining a clear airway is essential for adequate oxygenation and ventilation.Head Tilt-Chin Lift TechniqueThe head tilt-chin lift maneuver is an essential technique primarily used in patients without suspected cervical spine injuries. To perform this maneuver, one hand is placed on the patient’s forehead, and gentle pressure is applied backward to tilt the head. The fingertips of the other hand are positioned...
