Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To analyze pre-event clinical features associated with stroke preventability.
  • To determine the cumulative burden of risk factors requiring optimization after ischemic stroke.

Main Methods:

  • Prospective data collection on seven modifiable risk factors (Life's Simple 7) in ischemic stroke patients across three tertiary centers.
  • Stroke preventability defined by the presence of ≥4 risk factors needing optimization.
  • Bivariate and multivariate analyses to identify predictors of stroke preventability.

Main Results:

  • 49.0% of 787 ischemic stroke patients had ≥4 risk factors, indicating preventable strokes.
  • Preventable strokes were more frequent in younger patients and those with small artery occlusion.
  • Multivariate analysis identified age, female gender, coronary artery disease, and small artery occlusion as significant predictors of preventability.

Conclusions:

  • Approximately half of ischemic stroke cases are preventable by addressing modifiable risk factors.
  • Targeted strategies for risk factor control and lifestyle interventions are essential, particularly for high-risk populations, to prevent future stroke complications.
