Genetic susceptibility influences postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV). Two single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), CHRM3 rs2165870 and KCNB2 rs349358, show significant association with PONV incidence in Caucasians.
Area of Science:
- Anesthesiology
- Genetics
- Pharmacogenomics
Background:
- Postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) is a common complication following anesthesia.
- Patient factors and anesthetic techniques contribute to PONV risk.
- Genetic predisposition plays a role in PONV development.
Purpose of the Study:
- To systematically review studies investigating the genetic contribution to PONV risk.
- To identify specific genetic polymorphisms associated with PONV.
Main Methods:
- Systematic review of published literature up to June 2019.
- Inclusion of studies on PONV and genetic polymorphisms.
- Exclusion of reviews, meta-analyses, comments, and pharmacogenetic treatment studies.
Main Results:
- 14 articles were reviewed, including one genome-wide association study (GWAS).
- Seventeen polymorphisms were associated with PONV across studies.
- CHRM3 rs2165870 and KCNB2 rs349358 SNPs were significantly associated with PONV in Caucasians.
Conclusions:
- Genetic factors contribute to PONV susceptibility.
- CHRM3 rs2165870 and KCNB2 rs349358 SNPs appear to significantly influence PONV incidence in Caucasians.
- Further research is needed to explore genetic PONV susceptibility in diverse ethnic groups.
