Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Endocrinology
  • Nephrology

Background:

  • Renal adenocarcinoma metastasis to the thyroid is uncommon in clinical diagnosis.
  • Thyroid nodules are frequently encountered, necessitating accurate differential diagnosis.

Observation:

  • A patient presented with thyroid metastases.
  • The metastases were identified as clear-cell renal carcinoma.

Findings:

  • The primary renal tumor was treated 12 years prior for multiple cysts.
  • Thyroid metastasis served as an indicator of recurrent or previously undiagnosed renal cell carcinoma.

Implications:

  • Highlights the importance of considering metastatic disease in thyroid nodules, especially in patients with a history of renal cancer.
  • Suggests the need for thorough patient history and potentially advanced imaging in diagnosing thyroid abnormalities.
  • Underscores the potential for late presentation of renal cell carcinoma metastasis.
