Area of Science:

  • Pediatric Surgery
  • Pathology
  • Developmental Biology

Background:

  • Cervical thymic cysts are rare congenital anomalies.
  • Thymic tissue normally resides in the mediastinum.
  • Understanding ectopic thymic tissue is crucial for diagnosis.

Observation:

  • Three pediatric cases of cervical thymic cysts were surgically excised.
  • Cysts were multilocular with xanthochromic fluid and fibrous capsules.
  • The cysts contained lymphatic follicles and normal thymic tissue.

Findings:

  • Histological examination confirmed the presence of lymphatic follicles and thymic tissue, including cortex, medulla, and Hassall's corpuscles.
  • The thymic tissue within the cyst exhibited varying degrees of atrophy.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Implications:

    • This case series expands the understanding of cervical thymic cyst morphology.
    • Highlights the importance of considering ectopic thymic tissue in pediatric neck masses.
    • Provides histological insights into the development and composition of these rare cysts.
