Endoscopic Procedures III: Video Capsule Endoscopy

559
Capsule endoscopy, or wireless or video capsule endoscopy, is a diagnostic procedure for examining the entire gastrointestinal tract. Patients swallow a capsule about the size of a vitamin tablet. The capsule is equipped with a transmitter, a battery, an LED light source, and a color video camera to capture images throughout the gastrointestinal tract. This procedure is particularly useful for diagnosing conditions such as Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, tumors, polyps, ulcers,...

    Area of Science:

    • Optical Engineering
    • Medical Imaging Devices

    Background:

    • Capsule endoscopes need high-quality imaging (wide field of view, brightness, resolution) for diagnostics.
    • Wide-angle lens designs often lead to larger first elements, hindering miniaturization.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To develop a compact wide-angle lens for capsule endoscopes.
    • To enhance image quality and reduce lens size for improved diagnostic capabilities.

    Main Methods:

    • Utilized all-aspheric surfaces for optical aberration control.
    • Designed a lens system with a compact first element diameter.

    Main Results:

    • Achieved a wide field of view (160 degrees) and F-number of 2.8.
    • Maintained a total track length of 5 mm with over 60% relative illumination across the field of view.
    • Demonstrated a modulation transfer function over 30% at 180 lp/mm for a 1920x1080 CMOS sensor.

    Conclusions:

    • The proposed compact wide-angle lens design successfully improves image quality and reduces size for capsule endoscopes.
    • This advancement facilitates better diagnostic information capture in minimally invasive procedures.
