Background:

Interprofessional learning is crucial for healthcare teams.
Understanding how students develop interprofessional communication skills is limited.

Purpose of the Study:

To investigate occupational therapist and physiotherapist students' learning of interprofessional communication skills.
To analyze student communication during a virtual patient encounter.

Main Methods:

Pairs of occupational therapist and physiotherapist students interacted with a virtual patient.
Student interactions and conversations were video-recorded, transcribed, and analyzed using qualitative content analysis.

Main Results:

Students fostered a social learning environment through questioning and clarifying professional perspectives.
Comparing professional views facilitated interprofessional meaning-making and mutual understanding.
Students aimed to understand each other's professional viewpoints.

Conclusions:

Virtual patient encounters create reciprocal learning situations for health students.
Collaborative communication and decision-making in virtual settings enhance interprofessional communication learning.
This approach improves students' understanding of their own and other professions.
