Summary

This study examined how American Sign Language (ASL) comprehension is affected by factors like age of acquisition (AoA) and stimulus intelligibility. Efficient sign-watching skills can be learned quickly, regardless of when ASL was acquired.

Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate how AoA and stimulus intelligibility affect gaze behavior during ASL comprehension.
  • To compare gaze patterns and comprehension accuracy across different groups of ASL signers.
  • To determine if efficient sign-watching is correlated with AoA.

Main Methods:

  • 52 adult ASL signers were divided into four groups based on hearing status and ASL acquisition age (Deaf Early, Deaf Late, Hearing Late, Hearing Novice).
  • Participants watched signed stories in both normal (high intelligibility) and video-reversed (low intelligibility) conditions.
  • Gaze patterns and story comprehension accuracy were recorded and analyzed.

Main Results:

  • Video reversal significantly decreased story comprehension accuracy, with a greater impact on individuals who learned ASL later in life.
  • Video reversal also led to more dispersed gaze behavior across all participant groups.
  • Despite unique gaze patterns among groups, the effect of video reversal on gaze measures was consistent across all groups.
  • Gaze behavior was not correlated with AoA among fluent signers.

Conclusions:

  • Stimulus intelligibility significantly impacts ASL comprehension and gaze behavior, irrespective of AoA.
  • Efficient sign-watching strategies can be acquired rapidly, even by individuals with later exposure to ASL.
  • Future research should explore the neural mechanisms underlying sign language processing and gaze control.
