Summary
This summary is machine-generated.

Quantitative EEG spectral power analysis can differentiate poststroke depression (PSD) from non-depressed patients. Alpha and theta band power abnormalities, particularly in alpha1, are linked to PSD and depression severity.

Area of Science:

  • Neuroscience
  • Clinical Neurology
  • Psychiatry

Background:

  • Quantitative electroencephalography (qEEG) spectral power analysis is increasingly used for depression assessment.
  • Previous studies on poststroke depression (PSD) using qEEG have yielded inconsistent findings.
  • Differentiating PSD from poststroke non-depressed (PSND) individuals using qEEG requires further investigation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate if quantitative EEG spectral power abnormalities can differentiate patients with PSD from PSND subjects.
  • To explore the association between depression severity and EEG spectral power in poststroke patients.

Main Methods:

  • Resting-state EEG data were collected from 34 participants (11 PSD, 23 PSND).
  • Spectral power analysis was performed across six frequency bands (alpha1, alpha2, beta1, beta2, delta, theta) at 16 electrodes.
  • Pearson correlation and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analyses were used to assess associations and diagnostic accuracy.

Main Results:

  • PSD patients exhibited significantly higher alpha1 power (left temporal) and alpha2 power (left frontal pole) compared to PSND subjects.
  • Increased theta power was observed in central, temporal, and occipital regions in PSD patients.
  • A significant positive association was found between the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HDRS) total score and absolute alpha1 power in frontal, temporal, and parietal regions.

Conclusions:

  • Absolute powers in alpha and theta frequency bands effectively distinguish between PSD patients and PSND subjects.
  • Absolute alpha1 power is a reliable indicator, positively correlating with the severity of depression in poststroke individuals.
