Older adults not native to digital technology may experience technophobia, leading to anxiety and challenges with digital tools. Social networking use correlated with better technology adaptation and reduced anxiety in this demographic.
Area of Science:
- Gerontology
- Human-Computer Interaction
- Digital Health
Background:
- Digital innovation significantly impacts Quality of Life.
- Understanding the behavioral adaptation of non-digital natives to technology is crucial.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the impact of technology use on adults and the elderly.
- To assess the behavioral adaptation and technophobia risk in non-digital natives.
Main Methods:
- An observational study was conducted on adults and older subjects (50-67 years).
- Key variables measured included computer anxiety and technology use ability.
- Statistical analyses included Oneway ANOVA and Bonferroni's post-hoc tests.
Main Results:
- Non-autonomous, low-frequency, and help-seeking users exhibited higher computer anxiety (p<0.01).
- Gender did not significantly affect technology use or anxiety levels.
- Social networking engagement was associated with improved technology use and lower digital anxiety.
Conclusions:
- Technophobia presents a risk factor for non-digital natives, potentially hindering their adoption of digital solutions.
- This can negatively affect successful aging, leading to 'fragile aging' and inadequacy in using digital tools for enhanced living.
