External Female Genitals01:15

External Female Genitals

23.7K
The vulva encompasses the external structures of the female reproductive system. At the forefront is the monpubis, a cushion of fatty tissue atop the pubic bone. Once puberty sets in, this area typically grows hair. Extending from just behind the mons pubis are the labia majora (labia = 'lips'; majora = 'larger'), which are larger skin fs olds coated with hair. Nestled within are the labia minora (labia = 'lips'; minora = 'smaller'), which are thinner, more...

Nursing Assessment of the Genitourinary System I: Health History

287
The genitourinary system is critical to maintaining fluid balance, waste elimination, and reproductive function. Nurses play a vital role in assessing this system, beginning with a thorough health history. This process involves gathering patient information, identifying risk factors, and recognizing symptoms of genitourinary disorders. Early detection is vital for timely interventions and management.1. Assessment of the Rectum and Anus

884
Evaluating the rectum and anus plays a crucial role in conducting a thorough physical examination of the gastrointestinal system. Although it may be uncomfortable and often embarrassing for the patient, it holds immense diagnostic value, particularly in detecting gastrointestinal diseases and abnormalities. This guide will explain how to perform this assessment using inspection and palpation methods.

Summary

A new survey efficiently assesses patient-reported outcomes after female cosmetic genital surgery (FCGS). Despite complications, most patients report satisfaction and improved well-being post-FCGS.

Area of Science:

  • Plastic Surgery
  • Patient-Reported Outcomes

Background:

  • Assessing patient-reported outcomes (PROs) after female cosmetic genital surgery (FCGS) is crucial but challenging due to varied, time-consuming, and difficult-to-reproduce methodologies.
  • Existing methods for FCGS PRO assessment lack standardization, hindering comparative analysis and clinical implementation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To introduce and validate a novel, efficient survey for assessing patient-reported outcomes following female cosmetic genital surgery (FCGS).
  • To evaluate patient satisfaction, physical, psychosocial, and sexual well-being after FCGS using the developed survey.

Main Methods:

  • A retrospective chart review identified patients who underwent FCGS.
  • A novel 14-item telephone survey, adapted from the BREAST-Q, was administered to assess outcomes.
  • Data collected included demographic, clinical, operative characteristics, and patient-reported satisfaction and well-being.

Main Results:

  • The survey achieved a 50.6% response rate (39 patients) with a mean follow-up of 56 months.
  • Complications occurred in 28.2% of patients, with 10 requiring revision surgery; asymmetry and dehiscence were most common.
  • Despite complications, 97.4% found FCGS a good experience, were satisfied with results, and reported significant improvements in physical, psychosocial, and sexual well-being (P < 0.001).

Conclusions:

  • The novel survey provides an efficient method for assessing patient-reported outcomes after female cosmetic genital surgery (FCGS).
  • The majority of patients undergoing FCGS report satisfaction and significant improvements in well-being, even with potential complications and revision surgery.
