Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Genetics
  • Bioinformatics

Background:

  • Head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) is a prevalent global cancer.
  • Understanding the genetic underpinnings and prognostic factors of HNSCC is crucial for improved patient outcomes.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To identify genes and enriched pathways associated with HNSCC using bioinformatics and survival analysis.
  • To explore the roles of specific genes in HNSCC development and progression.

Main Methods:

  • Analysis of clinical data from 646 HNSCC patients.
  • Utilized Affymetrix NetAffx Query, protein-protein interaction (PPI) networks, and Kaplan-Meier survival analysis.
  • Examined gene expression data for associations with survival parameters (RFS, DFS, PFS, OS).

Main Results:

  • Identified nine significant genes (CCNA1, MMP3, FLRT3, GJB6, ZFR2, PITX2, SYCP2, MEI1, UGT8) associated with HNSCC (p < .05).
  • Constructed a PPI network to visualize gene interactions.
  • Developed a survival plot correlating gene expression with p-values.

Conclusions:

  • The nine identified genes play vital roles in HNSCC and are linked to key biological pathways.
  • These genes and their interactions provide potential biomarker indices for relapse time and risk stratification in HNSCC.
  • The study offers insights into the molecular mechanisms driving HNSCC progression.
