Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between pre-TBI health status and relative functional gain (RFG) following inpatient rehabilitation.
  • To utilize a data mining approach for identifying relevant pre-TBI health conditions.
  • To explore sex-specific differences in this association.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective, population-based cohort study using health administrative data from Ontario, Canada.
  • Inclusion of 5802 patients aged 14+ admitted to inpatient rehabilitation post-TBI.
  • Calculation of RFG and application of sex-specific multivariable linear regressions to identify associated pre-TBI health factors.

  • Average RFG was 52.8% for males and 51.6% for females.

Conclusions:

  • Comorbidities up to five years prior to TBI significantly affect RFG.
  • Findings emphasize the need for tailored interventions and interdisciplinary approaches to maximize functional gain in TBI patients.
  • Development of best practice guidelines for older male and female TBI patients is recommended.
