Sleep Apnea01:21

Sleep Apnea

379
Sleep apnea is a condition where breathing stops intermittently during sleep, often leading to significant health issues. Each episode can last from 10 to 20 seconds or more and is frequently accompanied by a brief arousal from sleep. This disturbance, largely unnoticed by the individual, can lead to severe daytime fatigue. Commonly, individuals seek help after being informed by their partners about loud snoring and noticeable breathing pauses during sleep.
The condition is more prevalent among...

Pulse Oximetry01:24

Pulse Oximetry

1.1K
Pulse oximetry, or SpO2, is a non-invasive method for continuously monitoring arterial oxygen saturation (SaO2). This procedure involves attaching a probe or sensor to the patient's fingertip, forehead, earlobe, or nose bridge. The sensor works by detecting changes in oxygen saturation levels through light signals generated by the oximeter and reflected by the pulsing blood under the probe.
Purpose
Average SpO2 values are greater than 95%. If the readings fall below 90%, it indicates that...

Area of Science:

  • Biomedical Engineering
  • Artificial Intelligence in Healthcare
  • Sleep Medicine

Background:

  • Polysomnography is the standard for obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) diagnosis but is costly and inconvenient.
  • There is a need for accessible and accurate OSA detection methods.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop and validate a deep feature transfer-based approach for detecting OSA using sleep sound signals.
  • To offer a more convenient and potentially self-administered diagnostic tool for OSA.

Main Methods:

  • A deep convolutional neural network was trained on audio data to identify respiration sounds.
  • The trained model was adapted to detect respiration sounds within patient sleep recordings.
  • Deep features from detected respiration sounds were used to train a logistic regression classifier for OSA identification.

Main Results:

  • The proposed method achieved accuracies ranging from 77.22% to 81.63% across different thresholds and sexes.
  • Area under the ROC curve values were between 0.79 and 0.82.
  • The approach demonstrated significant performance improvement over existing methods.

Conclusions:

  • Deep learning and transfer learning can enhance OSA diagnostic accuracy.
  • The proposed method offers a superior alternative to traditional audio analysis for OSA detection.
  • This approach facilitates easier, home-based initial OSA screening for patients.
