Corneal elastosis within lattice dystrophy lesions.

Summary

Lattice corneal dystrophy involves amyloid deposits containing elastotic degeneration. This study identifies elastin within these deposits using specific stains and microscopy, suggesting a novel association in corneal diseases.

Background:

Lattice corneal dystrophy is a rare inherited eye disease.
Characterized by abnormal deposits in the cornea.
Previous studies focused on amyloid composition.

Observation:

Corneal tissue from two patients with lattice corneal dystrophy was examined.
Light and electron microscopy were employed for detailed analysis.
Specific staining techniques were utilized to identify tissue components.

Findings:

Amyloid deposits within the cornea showed elastotic degeneration.
Elastin, a component of elastic fibers, was identified within the amyloid deposits.
Positive staining with Verhoeff-van Gieson and Movat pentachrome, along with autofluorescence, confirmed elastin presence.
