Summary

Most children with coronavirus disease-19 (COVID-19) experience mild symptoms and recover well. Viral RNA detection is longer in gastrointestinal samples than respiratory ones, particularly in younger children.

Background:

  • Coronavirus disease-19 (COVID-19) emerged as a global pandemic.
  • Understanding the clinical and epidemiological profile of pediatric COVID-19 is crucial for public health strategies.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the clinical and epidemiological characteristics of pediatric patients diagnosed with COVID-19.
  • To analyze age-related differences in COVID-19 presentation and viral shedding in children.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective analysis of pediatric COVID-19 cases from seven hospitals in Zhejiang Province, China.
  • Data collected for patients diagnosed between January 15 and March 15, 2020.
  • Inclusion of patients aged 3 months to 18 years.

Main Results:

  • Thirty-two pediatric patients were enrolled, with ages ranging from 3 months to 18 years.
  • Family aggregation was high in younger age groups (infants, preschool, school-aged children) but lower in adolescents (p < 0.05).
  • Mild symptoms like fever (62.5%), cough (31.3%), and fatigue (12.5%) were most common. Viral RNA persisted longer in gastrointestinal (28.9 days) than respiratory (15.8 days) samples, with longer shedding in younger children.
  • Pneumonia occurred in 14 children, with no significant age-related difference. All patients improved with treatment.

Conclusions:

  • Pediatric COVID-19 cases are generally mild with a good prognosis.
  • Investigating household contact history is vital for diagnosing COVID-19 in young children.
  • Gastrointestinal viral RNA shedding is prolonged, especially in younger pediatric populations, necessitating further research into transmission dynamics.
