Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Oncology
  • Pharmacology

Background:

  • Tamoxifen is a non-steroidal anti-oestrogen used in breast cancer treatment.
  • Ocular side effects of tamoxifen range from 0.9% to 11% incidence.
  • Tamoxifen acts as an antagonist in breast tissue, neurosensory retina, and retinal pigment epithelium (RPE).

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate ocular changes in patients undergoing tamoxifen treatment.
  • To determine if ocular changes persist after tamoxifen discontinuation.
  • To assess the progression and prognosis of tamoxifen-induced retinopathy.

Main Methods:

  • Case series involving three female breast cancer patients.
  • Multimodal imaging studies, including spectral domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT).
  • Monitoring patients during and after tamoxifen treatment.

Main Results:

  • All three patients exhibited crystalline retinopathy.
  • Spectral domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) detected these changes.
  • Visual acuity and imaging findings confirmed previous study results.

Conclusions:

  • Multimodal imaging aids in evaluating the progression of tamoxifen retinopathy.
  • Tamoxifen-induced ocular damage can be irreversible at certain toxicity levels.
  • Ocular monitoring is essential for patients on tamoxifen therapy.
