Language Development

718
Children master language quickly and with relative ease, supported by both biological predisposition and reinforcement. B. F. Skinner (1957) proposed that language is learned through reinforcement, while Noam Chomsky (1965) argued that language acquisition mechanisms are biologically determined.
The critical period for language acquisition suggests that the ability to acquire language is at its peak early in life. As people age, this proficiency decreases. Language development begins very...

Learning Disabilities

Learning disabilities are cognitive disorders caused by neurological impairments that affect cognitive functions like language and reading, without indicating overall intellectual or developmental challenges. These disabilities differ from global intellectual or developmental disabilities as they are limited to distinct cognitive functions. Common learning disabilities include dysgraphia, dyslexia, and dyscalculia, each of which impacts unique aspects of learning.

Area of Science:

  • Pediatrics
  • Developmental Psychology
  • Computational Linguistics

Background:

  • Developmental language disorders (DLDs) are common in children, with speech ability (SA) being a key indicator for screening.
  • Existing DLD screening methods face challenges like test failure, incomplete evaluations, and reliance on professionals.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop a fast and accurate screening solution for children's DLDs.
  • To overcome limitations of traditional DLD screening methods through innovative approaches.

Main Methods:

  • A novel comprehensive inducing procedure (CIP) using audio-visual stimuli was developed to avoid text-based test failures.
  • A deep learning framework was designed for fast and accurate DLD screening.
  • Comprehensive evaluation indicators were proposed, considering children's language acquisition characteristics.

Main Results:

  • The proposed deep learning framework demonstrated high effectiveness in DLD screening with 92.6% accuracy.
  • A new CIP dataset comprising approximately 2,200 responses from over 200 children was created as a benchmark.
  • The findings suggest the framework's potential for screening other behavioral abnormalities.

Conclusions:

  • Fast and accurate screening of children's DLDs is achievable using the proposed deep learning framework.
  • An effective CIP with comprehensive indicators is essential for successful DLD screening in children.
