Summary

A 12-week wearable-based program, including a device, app, and physical therapist (PT) counseling, significantly improved moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) in knee osteoarthritis (OA) patients. This intervention enhanced physical activity levels for individuals managing knee OA.

Background:

  • Current knee osteoarthritis (OA) guidelines advocate for active lifestyles, yet a significant majority of patients remain inactive.
  • Previous research indicated that physiotherapist (PT)-led counseling combined with a wearable device improved physical activity and quality of life in knee OA patients.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the impact of a 12-week, multifaceted wearable-based program on physical activity and patient-reported outcomes in individuals with knee OA.

Main Methods:

  • A randomized controlled trial with a delayed-control design was employed.
  • The intervention group received group education, a wearable device (Fitbit), a compatible app (FitViz), and biweekly PT phone calls for 8 weeks, followed by independent use.
  • Primary outcome: time spent in daily moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA); Secondary outcomes: daily steps, sedentary behavior, and various patient-reported scores.
