Action readiness, a component of emotion, positively correlates with sexual functioning in men. Increased approach-oriented action readiness after erotic stimulation was linked to better sexual function, suggesting potential psychological interventions for erectile dysfunction.
Area of Science:
- Psychology
- Sexuality Research
- Behavioral Science
Background:
- Emotions comprise affect and action readiness, influencing behavior and physiological responses.
- Affect guides behavior through approach or withdrawal tendencies.
- Action readiness reflects an individual's willingness to engage with their environment.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the associations between affect, action readiness, and sexual functioning.
- To apply emotion theory components to the domain of human sexuality.
- To explore the role of action readiness in male sexual health.
Main Methods:
- Study included 70 male patients with urologic conditions, with and without sexual problems.
- Affective polarity (trait and state) was measured using the Positive and Negative Affect Schedule.
- Sexual functioning was assessed via the International Index of Erectile Functioning questionnaire.
Main Results:
- Erotic stimulation significantly increased approach-oriented action readiness compared to baseline trait levels.
- State approach-oriented action readiness demonstrated significant positive associations with multiple aspects of sexual functioning.
- Action readiness emerged as a key psychological factor influencing sexual functioning in this cohort.
Conclusions:
- Action readiness was positively correlated with all assessed aspects of sexual functioning.
- Findings suggest potential for positive psychology interventions to enhance action readiness in men with erectile dysfunction.
- Further research is recommended to fully elucidate the role of action readiness in sexuality.
