Brief Workplace Interventions Addressing Burnout, Compassion Fatigue, and Teamwork: A Pilot Study
1School of Nursing, University of Northern Colorado, Greeley, Colorado, USA.
Brief workplace interventions show promise for reducing nurse burnout and compassion fatigue. Journaling, in particular, improved several key indicators, suggesting feasibility for improving nursing well-being and teamwork.
Area of Science:
- Nursing
- Occupational Health
- Psychology
Background:
- Burnout and compassion fatigue negatively impact nurses, patients, and healthcare organizations.
- Effective, brief interventions are needed to support nurse well-being and teamwork, which are inversely related to burnout.
Purpose of the Study:
- To assess the feasibility, acceptability, and effectiveness of five-minute workplace interventions for nurses.
- To examine the impact of these interventions on burnout, compassion fatigue, and teamwork perceptions.
Main Methods:
- A quasi-experimental pilot study randomized nurses into five groups: meditation, journaling, gratitude, outside, and control.
- Interventions were implemented over a six-week period, with participants engaging during most shifts.
Main Results:
- Effect sizes for burnout (0.495-0.757) and situation monitoring (0.252-1.1) were notable.
- The journaling group demonstrated the most significant improvements in burnout, compassion satisfaction, situation monitoring, and communication.
Conclusions:
- Brief workplace interventions are feasible and acceptable for nurses.
- Preliminary evidence suggests these interventions can positively impact nurse burnout, compassion fatigue, and teamwork, warranting further investigation in larger studies.
