Background:

  • Moraxella keratitis is an uncommon ocular infection.
  • Understanding its prevalence, risk factors, and outcomes is vital for clinical management.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the prevalence, risk factors, and visual outcomes of Moraxella keratitis.
  • To identify prognostic factors associated with poorer visual acuity and need for adjuvant treatment.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective review of 101 culture-proven Moraxella keratitis cases (Jan 2016-Dec 2018).
  • Microbiological identification using MALDI-TOF MS.
  • Analysis of patient demographics, ocular surface conditions, systemic factors, and treatment outcomes.

Main Results:

  • Moraxella lacunata (50%) and M. nonliquefasciens (38%) were the most common isolates.
  • 28% had systemic predisposing factors (e.g., diabetes), 87% had ocular surface conditions (e.g., blepharitis, prior surgery).
  • Hypopyon and age >60 years predicted poorer visual acuity; larger infiltrate and hypoesthesia predicted need for adjuvant treatment.

Conclusions:

  • Moraxella keratitis, though rare in France, poses a significant threat to vision.
  • Identifying patients with compromised ocular surfaces, especially neurotrophic keratopathy, is key to preventing delayed healing and reducing the need for interventions like amniotic membrane transplantation.
