Aberrant pain modulation in trigeminal neuralgia patients

Trigeminal neuralgia (TN) patients show impaired supraspinal pain modulation, unlike healthy individuals. Lower beta-endorphin levels in TN patients may contribute to their chronic pain experience.

- Healthy controls exhibited significantly greater HPT changes during CPM compared to TN patients (p<0.0001).
- The CPM effect in TN patients was significant only in the 2nd and 3rd minutes post-immersion, while it lasted until the 4th minute in controls.
- Plasma beta-endorphin levels were significantly lower in TN patients than in healthy controls (p=0.003).
Conclusions:
- TN patients demonstrate impaired supraspinal pain modulation, also known as Diffuse Noxious Inhibitory Controls (DNIC).
- Reduced beta-endorphin levels may be a contributing factor to the chronic pain experienced by TN patients.
- These findings highlight potential therapeutic targets for managing TN pain.
