Summary

Women undergoing vaginal surgery experienced better physical function recovery at 6 weeks when using boot stirrups compared to candy cane stirrups. This study highlights the impact of positioning on patient outcomes after gynecologic procedures.

Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare the physical function recovery at 6 weeks after vaginal surgery between women positioned using candy cane stirrups and boot stirrups.
  • To determine if the type of stirrup used during vaginal surgery impacts patient-reported physical function outcomes.

Main Methods:

  • A single-masked, randomized controlled trial was conducted involving women undergoing vaginal surgery.
  • Participants were randomized to either candy cane or boot stirrup positioning.
  • Physical function was assessed using the Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System (PROMIS) physical function short form-20a from baseline to 6 weeks post-surgery.

  • 138 women were included in the final analysis (72 in the candy cane group, 66 in the boot stirrup group).

  • Boot stirrups are associated with significantly better physical function at 6 weeks after vaginal surgery compared to candy cane stirrups.
  • The choice of stirrup type may be an important factor in optimizing postoperative recovery and physical function for patients undergoing vaginal surgery.
