Summary

Brief interventions by general practitioners (GPs) supported by smokers' clinics significantly reduced smoking prevalence. This sustained approach demonstrated a cumulative effect on patient smoking habits over time.

Area of Science:

  • Public Health
  • General Practice
  • Smoking Cessation

Background:

  • Smoking remains a significant public health concern.
  • General practitioners (GPs) are well-positioned to intervene with smokers.
  • Sustained, continuous interventions may yield cumulative effects on smoking prevalence.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the cumulative effect of a sustained brief intervention by GPs on smoking prevalence.
  • To compare the effectiveness of brief intervention with and without support from a smokers' clinic.

Main Methods:

  • A quasi-experimental study involving 101 GPs across 27 practices in inner London.
  • Three groups: brief intervention with smokers' clinic support (SBI), brief intervention alone (BI), and usual care controls.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Six cross-sectional surveys over three years, with over 9000 adult patients per survey.
  • Main Results:

    • A 5.5% decline in self-reported smoking prevalence in the SBI group over 30 months.
    • Compared to 2.1% (BI) and 2.8-3.0% (controls), the SBI decline was significantly greater.
    • No significant difference in decline was observed between BI and control groups.

    Conclusions:

    • Sustained, continuous brief interventions by GPs, especially with smokers' clinic support, can effectively reduce smoking prevalence in practice populations.
    • These interim results are encouraging for public health strategies targeting smoking cessation.
    • Longer observation periods are needed to confirm firm conclusions.
