The ankle is formed by the talocrural joint (crural = leg). It consists of the articulations between the talus bone of the foot and the distal ends of the tibia and fibula of the leg. Summary

Both arthroscopic Broström (AB) and arthroscopic all-inside (AI) ligament repair effectively treat chronic ankle instability. The AI technique showed a significantly lower complication rate compared to AB.

Background:

  • Chronic lateral ankle instability is commonly treated with arthroscopic Broström (AB) or arthroscopic all-inside (AI) ligament repair.
  • Both techniques are widely adopted, necessitating a comparative analysis of their clinical efficacy.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare the clinical outcomes of arthroscopic Broström (AB) versus arthroscopic all-inside (AI) ligament repair for chronic lateral ankle instability.
  • To evaluate functional scores, pain levels, range of motion, and complication rates between the two arthroscopic techniques.

Main Methods:

  • A retrospective comparative study involving 39 patients with chronic ankle instability undergoing arthroscopic surgery.
  • Patients were divided into AB (n=20) and AI (n=19) groups, with assessments of American Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Society (AOFAS) hindfoot score and visual analog pain scale (VAS) pre- and postoperatively.

  • AI repair may be preferable due to its reduced risk of complications such as painful plantarflexion restriction and neuritis.
