Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To objectively measure free-living physical activity in adults with Down syndrome.
  • To analyze sedentary behavior, light, moderate, and vigorous physical activity levels.
  • To identify factors associated with physical activity in adults with DS.

Main Methods:

  • Waist-worn accelerometry was used to collect objective physical activity data.
  • Data were gathered from adults with DS between 2018 and 2020.
  • Statistical analyses included descriptive statistics, bivariate, and regression analyses.

Main Results:

  • Fifty-two adults with DS provided valid accelerometer data; 46% were male, and 75% were overweight/obese.
  • Median daily sedentary time was 393.5 minutes, with 10.3 sedentary bouts.
  • Median daily step count was 3,050 steps; moderate and vigorous activity were minimal.
  • Adults living alone demonstrated higher step counts and light physical activity.

Conclusions:

  • Adults with Down syndrome engage in minimal health-enhancing physical activity.
  • The study population did not meet current US physical activity recommendations.
  • Objective data highlight significant physical activity deficits in adults with DS.
