Self-Report Tests of Personality01:22

Self-Report Tests of Personality

648
Self-report inventories are objective personality assessments that use multiple-choice items or numbered scales, typically ranging from 1 (strongly disagree) to 5 (strongly agree). They are often called Likert scales after Rensis Likert. These inventories are widely used due to their ease of administration and cost-effectiveness. One of the most prominent examples is the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI), initially developed in the 1940s to assess abnormal personality traits.

Reliability and Validity01:29

Reliability and Validity

13.6K
Reliability and validity are two important considerations that must be made with any type of data collection. Reliability refers to the ability to consistently produce a given result. In the context of psychological research, this would mean that any instruments or tools used to collect data do so in consistent, reproducible ways.

Self-Esteem01:28

Self-Esteem

136
Self-esteem, a core aspect of psychological well-being, reflects an individual's positive and negative self-evaluation in terms of worth, competence, and overall value. It is both a stable trait and a dynamic process, influenced by experiences and social interactions across the lifespan. While global self-esteem offers a general assessment, research highlights that self-esteem is multidimensional and varies across specific life domains.Domain-Specific Self-EsteemResearchers have delineated...

Wechsler's Contribution to Measures of Intelligence

1.9K
David Wechsler, a psychologist who worked with World War I veterans, developed a significant IQ test in 1939 called the Wechsler-Bellevue Intelligence Scale. This test was innovative because it combined several subtests that measured both verbal and nonverbal skills, reflecting Wechsler's belief that intelligence is a global capacity involving purposeful action, rational thinking, and effective interaction with the environment. This test later evolved into the Wechsler Adult Intelligence...

Self-Evaluation Maintenance Model01:29

Self-Evaluation Maintenance Model

187
The Self-Evaluation Maintenance (SEM) model offers a psychological framework to understand how individuals’ self-esteem is influenced by the achievements of others, particularly those with whom they share close personal bonds. The SEM model operates when personal rather than social identity guides individuals. Central to this model is the notion that individuals have an inherent desire to preserve a favorable self-image, which is continuously shaped by interpersonal comparisons and...

Self-Evaluation: Self-Enhancement and Self-Verification

5.6K
Social psychologists have documented that feeling good about ourselves and maintaining positive self-esteem is a powerful motivator of human behavior (Tavris & Aronson, 2008). In the United States, members of the predominant culture typically think very highly of themselves and view themselves as good people who are above average on many desirable traits (Ehrlinger, Gilovich, & Ross, 2005). Often, our behavior, attitudes, and beliefs are affected when we experience a threat to our...

Area of Science:

  • Educational Psychology
  • Psychometrics

Background:

  • Social and emotional learning (SEL) is crucial for student development.
  • Efficient and reliable assessments are needed to measure SEL competencies.
  • Existing measures may not always capture student perspectives effectively.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop and validate the SSIS SEL Brief Scales-Student Form (SSIS SELb-S) as an efficient measure of student SEL.
  • To select a concise set of items from the full SSIS SEL Rating Form - Student.
  • To provide a student-reported assessment for use in low-stakes decision-making.

Main Methods:

  • Item response theory (IRT) was used to select 20 items from the full SSIS SEL Rating Form - Student.
  • Ratings were collected from 800 students in Grades 3-12.
  • Reliability and validity analyses were conducted on the selected items.

Main Results:

  • The SSIS SELb-S consists of 20 items selected for maximal score information and rating efficiency.
  • Initial reliability and validity analyses support the use of the SSIS SELb-S.
  • The scale effectively incorporates student perspectives for SEL assessment.

Conclusions:

  • The SSIS SELb-S is a promising, efficient tool for assessing students' social and emotional learning.
  • It provides valuable student self-report data for low-stakes educational decisions.
  • The scale supports the inclusion of student voice in evaluating SEL competencies for ages 8-18.
