The Developmental Pediatrics Unit (DPU) Training Program in Turkey is sustainable and applicable for addressing early childhood development and developmental difficulties. Addressing health system barriers is key for its long-term success in low and middle-income countries.
Area of Science:
- Pediatrics
- Global Health
- Developmental Pediatrics
Background:
- Early childhood development (ECD) and developmental difficulties (DDs) require sustainable programs in low and middle-income countries (LMICs).
- The Developmental Pediatrics Unit (DPU) Training Program was implemented in Turkey in 2010.
Purpose of the Study:
- To evaluate the applicability and sustainability of the DPU Training Program in pediatric referral centers in Turkey.
- To assess the services, training, research, and advocacy aspects of the DPUs seven years post-implementation.
Main Methods:
- Cross-sectional design.
- Quantitative and qualitative methods were employed.
- Assessment of DPU services, training, research, and advocacy.
Main Results:
- Five of six established DPUs maintained clinical services, training, research, and advocacy.
- 23,710 children were referred, primarily for perinatal risks and chronic illness.
- Facilitators included staff motivation, administrator support, and client satisfaction; a barrier was invisibility in the healthcare system.
Conclusions:
- The DPU Training Program demonstrates applicability and sustainability in Turkey.
- Addressing health system barriers is crucial for the program's long-term success in LMICs.
