Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate spinal height increases using three-dimensional (3-D) spinal positioning.
  • To assess the effects of manual distraction load during 3-D spinal positioning.
  • To correlate spinal height changes with trunk rotation degrees.

Main Methods:

  • Fifty-six participants were divided into two groups: 3-D spinal position with manual distraction and 3-D spinal position without manual distraction.
  • Spinal height was measured pre- and post-intervention using a stadiometer.
  • Repeated measures ANOVA and paired t-tests analyzed spinal height changes; Pearson correlation assessed trunk rotation correlation.

Main Results:

  • Mean spinal height increased by 6.30 mm (±6.22) with manual distraction and 5.69 mm (±4.13) without.
  • Significant spinal height increases were observed pre- vs. post-intervention in both groups.
  • No significant correlation was found between trunk rotation and spinal height changes.

Conclusions:

  • Three-dimensional spinal positioning, with or without manual distraction, effectively increases spinal height.
  • 3-D spinal positioning without manual distraction is a viable option for home use.
  • This method may contribute to maintaining intervertebral disc (IVD) health.
