Background:

  • Tinnitus affects over 18% of the population in industrialized nations and is often considered untreatable.
  • Few studies have explored acupuncture's efficacy for tinnitus, with none specifically focusing on acute cases (<3 months).

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the feasibility of patient recruitment and adherence in a pilot study of acupuncture for acute idiopathic tinnitus.
  • To evaluate the effect sizes of acupuncture on subjective and objective outcomes using a randomized controlled design.

Main Methods:

  • A randomized controlled trial comparing usual care (n=23) with usual care plus 4 acupuncture sessions over 4-6 weeks (n=25).
  • Tinnitus severity was measured using visual analogue scales, Tinnitus Functional Index, 12-item Mini Tinnitus Questionnaire, and tone audiometry at baseline and 6 weeks.
