Background:

  • Anterior open bite (AOB) is linked to functional issues in the stomatognathic system.
  • Limited research exists on brain cortex activation in children with AOB during rest and function.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate brain cortex activity in children with AOB at rest and during deglutition and phonation.
  • To explore associations between IQ, attention, heart rate, and oxygen saturation with brain activity in children with AOB.

Main Methods:

  • Quantitative electroencephalography (QEEG) was used on 14 children (7 with AOB, 7 without), aged 10-13 years.
  • Participants underwent IQ testing, the Test of Variables of Attention (TOVA), and SpO2 measurements.
  • Statistical analyses compared brain activity and cognitive/physiological measures between groups.

Main Results:

  • No significant differences were found in IQ, overall TOVA performance, SpO2, or BPM between groups.
  • A statistically significant difference was observed in response time within the TOVA test (p=0.03).
  • Significant differences in brain activity (alpha/theta and alpha peaks) were detected during resting tongue position between children with and without AOB (p<0.05).

Conclusions:

  • Children with AOB exhibit distinct brain cortex activity patterns during tongue rest.
  • These neurological differences may be relevant for diagnosing and treating AOB.
  • Future research incorporating neuroscience could lead to novel diagnostic and therapeutic approaches for malocclusions, focusing on both dental and neurological aspects.
