Quantitative bone single photon emission computed tomography/computed tomography (SPECT/CT) values, specifically SUVmax and SUVmean, can differentiate benign from malignant cartilaginous bone neoplasms. This imaging technique aids orthopedic surgeons in selecting appropriate treatment for bone tumors.

Background:

  • Cartilaginous bone neoplasms require accurate differentiation between benign and malignant types for appropriate treatment.
  • Bone single photon emission computed tomography/computed tomography (SPECT/CT) offers quantitative imaging parameters that may aid in this differentiation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the efficacy of quantitative bone SPECT/CT parameters in distinguishing benign from malignant cartilaginous bone neoplasms.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective analysis of bone SPECT/CT scans from 10 patients with 8 benign and 2 malignant cartilaginous bone neoplasms.
  • Quantitative analysis included maximum standardized uptake value (SUVmax), mean SUV (SUVmean), metabolic bone volume (MBV), and total bone uptake (TBU).

Main Results:

  • Significant differences were observed in SUVmax (P=0.028) and SUVmean (P=0.00036) between benign and malignant lesions, with no overlap.
  • No significant differences were found for MBV (P=0.74) and TBU (P=0.47) between the groups.

Conclusions:

  • Standardized uptake values (SUVmax and SUVmean) from bone SPECT/CT show promise in differentiating benign from malignant cartilaginous bone neoplasms.
  • These quantitative metrics can assist orthopedic surgeons in treatment planning for patients with bone tumors.
