Background:

The COVID-19 pandemic prompted social distancing and reduced travel in the U.S.
The pandemic's effect on trauma and emergency general surgery (EGS) patient volumes was previously undocumented.

Purpose of the Study:

To analyze the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on trauma and EGS patient volumes.
To compare patient volumes before and during the pandemic using historical data.

Main Methods:

Compared trauma admissions and EGS cases from February 1 to April 14, 2017-2020.
Utilized five two-week periods for analysis.
Employed Poisson regression for statistical comparison across time periods.

Main Results:

Trauma admissions decreased by 57.4% (p<0.001) in Feb-Apr 2020.
Motor vehicle collisions (MVCs) dropped by 80.5% (p<0.001), and non-MVCs by 45.1% (p<0.001).
No significant change was observed in EGS cases (p=0.70) or trauma cases in prior years (2017-2019).

Conclusions:

The COVID-19 pandemic correlated with a significant reduction in trauma admissions.
MVCs experienced a more substantial decrease in admissions compared to non-MVC trauma cases.
EGS patient volumes were unaffected by the pandemic interventions.
