Summary

Rib histology for age estimation is unreliable if the sampling location is uncertain. This study found significant differences in histological variables along the rib, emphasizing the critical importance of the sampling site for accurate age-at-death assessment.

  • Significant differences in cortical area (Ct.Ar) were found between anterior, midshaft, and posterior sampling locations.

Conclusions:

  • Sampling location is a critical factor influencing the accuracy of histological age estimation from ribs.
  • If the exact sampling location is unknown, an anterior rib section is recommended.
  • While a single section can provide an age estimate, analyzing two sections is advisable to account for intra-individual variation.
